Peter obtained an MA degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) at Cambridge University and an MPhil in Electrical Engineering at Imperial College.

He worked for Philips Research in the fields of optical character recognition, robot vision, HDTV, LCD systems, and AI. From 1992 to 2002, he was Director of Philips Research Laboratories UK, and a member of the international management team of Philips Research.

Since then he has undertaken a portfolio of non-executive and advisory roles, particularly in HE and science policy.

He is a past President of the Institute of Physics, and a past Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

He was a member of the Board of HEFCE from 2002 to 2008. He chaired the REF Impact pilot in physics and was a member of the 2014 REF physics panel. He currently chairs the assessment panel for the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund.

He is a member of the Loughborough University Council, a former visiting professor at Imperial College, and a former Vice Chair of Sussex University Council. He currently chairs advisory boards at Imperial College and the University of Surrey, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2002.

He has acted in a number of advisory roles relating to Technology and Science Policy. These have included chairing an International Science benchmarking review at NPL and serving on the mid-term review of the Energy Technologies Institute. He currently chairs the Advisory Board of the European Active and Assisted Living programme, and is a member of the Horizon 2020 Advisory Group for Societal Challenge 1.
