University of Surrey
The 5G Innovation Centre
This project was awarded £11.6 million to help the University of Surrey deliver a specialised fifth generation or ‘5G’ mobile technology innovation centre on its main Guildford campus.
The project will research advanced technologies for a future 5G network. It will aim to establish a world-leading position in mobile broadband communications and internet innovations.
It will include the development of a 5G ‘test bed’, based on the university campus, on which to test technologies in a real-world environment.
Starting from state-of-the-art 4G, the centre will develop even more advanced technologies that place the user at the heart of the design process. By partnering leading academics with industry, it will aim to develop the technologies that are required to create the perception of ‘infinite capacity’, drive economic growth, and actively contribute to and shape the future 5G system.
‘5GIC’ has formal support from a significant number of the world's most notable mobile network operators, infrastructure and tools providers, media and communications organisations and the UK's communications regulator. Together they have pledged time, expertise and other contributions totalling more than £30 million.
Partners include: Aeroflex, AIRCOM International, BBC, BT, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Ofcom, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica and Vodafone.
The project is planning a major new centre located on the Guildford campus that will be home to 150 researchers and around 100 PhD students. The centre, which will be built to high environmental standards, is expected to be completed by January 2015.
